(1)
I have designed 2 weeks English ( 10 sessions) planning and engaging resources, based on ‘Stuck’ by Oliver Jeffers, where children will write their own stories at the end of the topic. Resources include wordbanks, sequencing activities and planning templates. I have also included Guided Reading activities ( 3 sessions) , linked with the theme, including a Powerpoint on Gorillas and and comprehension questions, All sessions include notes for whole class teaching and ideas for tasks. I have also included some ideas for links to other subjects such as PE and art. I have used these plans with KS1, but they can be easily adapted for EYFS and Year 3 too.

Christmas Writing Planning: Mog's Calamity

(0)
This is 10 sessions worth of Christmas English planning that I have used with Year 2 and Year 3. It is based on the wonderful advert that Sainsbury’s and The National Literacy Trust made a few years back. It is a lovely animation and can be easily found on Youtube. Mog’s Calamity. The planning provides ideas for talk for writing games and ideas, differentiated activities and resources. At the end of the sequence of lessons, the children make their own Christmas picture book of the own story, based on the story of Mog. We colour photocopy these so the children can take them home as well as sticking in books as wonderful writing evidence. This is such an engaging resource and every year we achieve wonderful writing results. All resources are provided for each session. This is a 2 week unit but sessions can be easily adpated and shortened/ extended, depending on the needs of your class.

A Christmas Toy Story (KS1 Nativity Script)

(3)
This is a great Nativity script about a shelf of toys learning about Christmas. So it includes the traditional story but with a modern twist! It has ideas for some traditional and more modern songs which suits all ages. It includes simple stage directions and has 72 parts so can be used for the whole of KS1. This could even be easily adapted for KS2! It is all in Word so it can be easily adapted for more / less parts by including more / less non speaking or sharing some lines! It lasts for about 40 minutes and all costumes can be easily hand made. If you want any more ideas or have any queries about anything then please just leave a comment and I'll get back to you. I can give more ideas for the costumes we made. I have included the a casting list to make it easy to cast your parts and I have also included a programme to hand out on the night of the show. All you have to do is copy and paste your casting list. Any feedback is appreciated and I hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

Reading for pleasure Quiz

I designed this for a whole school assembly. It is a quiz for Children versus the adults and is differentiated accordingly. It contains fun picture rounds, such as which character enjoys this food? Guess the book, what’s the film ( based on a book), multiple choice rounds and a tie breaker about the seven dwarfs. The assembly also begins with interesting facts about well known books and facts about how reading can be good for you! It ends with a beautiful poem about reading by Julia Donaldson. We had a panel of children and a panel of adults at the front and asked for help from the audience. We even invited parents and governors and it was very successful. This was used for World Book Day but could used for a range of contexts and is suitable for KS2 and 3. Answers are included.

The importance of phonics and reading workshop

I have used this powerpoint for a parent workshop on the importance of Phonics and Reading. It talks through the terminology used in phonics, summarises every phase, encourages parents to create sound buttons etc so it is very interactive and also explains how parents can support phonics, reading and writing at home. It also includes information on the Year 1 phonics screening and how they support at home. We have also sent the presentation home for parents to keep so they can refer back to the guidance when helping with phonics at home. This presentation has had excellent feedback and has also been used by the local authority. This can also be used as staff training to help other members of staff (such as NQT’s and new members of staff)who are not phonics trained understand the terminology and importance of it.

It contains a quiz between the adults and the pupils / children Vs families. I asked the SLT to sit at the front behind a table and the rest of the school played against them. The quiz involves guessing characters, guess book from the one liners and even includes a tie breaker. Parents were invited and it was a real success.
